Kim Philby, who died on May 11, 1988, was a British officer, author, and spy. Philby was born in 1912 into a prominent British family and was educated at Westminster School in London. Philby joined the British Secret Intelligence Service in 1940, where he served as an Agent-in-Charge of several operations. In 1941, he moved to Washington, D.C., to become the U.K. Security Liaison during World War II. Philby then returned to London in 1949, where he provided intelligence to the British government on the Soviet Union, and served as a double agent. In 1951, Philby became the Soviet Union's main U.K. informant. In 1963, he defected to the Soviet Union, where he lived until his death. Philby was known for his ability to deceive and elude both the British and Soviet governments. He authored several books about his intelligence work, including My Silent War and Spybuster. Philby is survived by his three sons and two daughters.
