Robbie Robertson, the musical innovator, songwriter, film composer, and producer passed away on August 9th, 2023 at the age of 80. Born on July 5th, 1943 in Toronto, Canada, Robertson developed a strong passion for music early on in life. After forming a band in high school, Robertson began his career by playing with folk-music legend Ronnie Hawkins as his lead guitarist. He then joined the rockabilly group, The Hawks, which eventually rebranded itself as The Band. During his time as a songwriter in The Band, Robertson wrote numerous groundbreaking songs that were performed by not only The Band, but many other notable musicians including Bob Dylan, Van Morrison, Eric Clapton, and Emmylou Harris. His works have impacted generations of music fans around the world, becoming some of the most legendary and influential musical articles of all time. Throughout his career, Robertson won many awards for his contributions to the music industry. He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, and the Songwriters Hall of Fame on not one, but two occasions. He also received a star on Canada’s Walk of Fame, an honorary doctorate from McMaster University, and other prestigious awards. Robbie Robertson will be remembered fondly for his talents and for the lasting impact which his music made on the world. He is survived by his wife and four children.
