Robbie Coltrane, the acclaimed Scottish actor beloved for his roles as Hagrid in the Harry Potter films and in the BBC television series Cracker, has died. He was 72. Born in Rutherglen, Scotland in 1950, the future star studied at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art in London. Coltrane's stage career is highlighted by his portrayal of Buddha in the Jonathan Miller production of the Tiger of Malaya. Coltrane made the transition to screen in the early 1980s, with appearances in Seasons of the Year and the BBC’s Law & Order, as well as the television miniseries Tutti Frutti with Jonathan Pryce. In 1991 the actor gained fame as Eddy "Fitz" Fitzgerald on Cracker. He followed up that performance in 1993 with the role of Rubeus Hagrid in Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone, and reprised the character in subsequent films of the series. Other film roles included those in Goldeneye (1995), The World is Not Enough (1999) and Monopol (2003). Coltrane was also an enthusiastic singer, musician, and poet. Even offscreen, the Scottish actor was renowned for his philanthropy and public campaigns for social good. From his advocacy of AIDS research to his fight to raise funds for the Comic Relief charity, he was an inspiring leader and role model. At the time of his passing, Coltrane left behind a bright legacy of memorable characters that remain some of the most beloved in the movie industry. Robbie Coltrane was 72 when he perished on October 14, 2022. He is survived by his wife, Rhona, his two children, and his grandchildren.
