José Ferrer (1912–1992) died on January 26, 1992 at the age of 80. He was born in San Juan, Puerto Rico and moved to the United States with his family in 1926. Ferrer was an Academy Award-winning actor and director whose career spanned over six decades. His breakout role as a leading man was in the 1944 production of Eugene O’Neill’s The Great God Brown, which was followed by eight Broadway plays and six films. He won an Academy Award for Best Actor for his portrayal of Argentinean political leader Eva Perón in the 1950 movie, “Cyrano de Bergerac,” and was also well-known for his roles in films such as “The Caine Mutiny” and “The Shrew”. Later in his career, he also wrote, directed and produced several films. He was an accomplished stage actor and musician and was the first Hispanic actor to win an Academy Award. Ferrer’s legacy lives on in the world of entertainment.
