José Fernández, beloved son, brother, friend, and professional athlete, passed away at age 24 on 2016-09-25 00:00:00 UTC. José was born in Santa Clara, Cuba, and leaves behind a legacy of incredible perseverance in his pursuit of the American Dream to play Major League Baseball. A timely defector from Cuba, his Major League debut in 2013 was of great acclaim. As a pitcher for the Miami Marlins, José was an All-Star for three consecutive years, a two-time winner of the Fielding Bible Award, as well as the National League Rookie of the Year Award. He was widely considered one of the most electrifying prospects in baseball and one of the most talented and unforgettable pitchers in the game today. José will be remembered fondly for his passionate grasp of the game, his spirit, and the joy and love he brought to the field each day. He is survived by his father, Ramon Hernandez; mother, Maritza Fernandez; and sister, Olga Hernandez. José touched many lives and will be deeply missed.
