James William "Jimmy" Buffett (December 25, 1946 - September 1, 2023) was an American singer, songwriter, actor, and author who died at his home in Palm Beach, Florida, on September 1, 2023, at the age of 76. An icon of the 1970s, Buffett is best known for creating a "gulf and western" sound that blended tropical themes with Southern country-rock influences. His 1977 release, Changes in Latitudes, Changes in Attitudes, peaked at number 17 on the US Billboard Top 200. Buffett's subsequent albums yielded such popular hits as "Margaritaville," "Come Monday," and "Cheeseburger in Paradise." He was also known for being involved with several timely and charitable causes, such as supporting environmental protection, raising money for education, and fighting pediatric cancer. Throughout his career, Buffett earned numerous music awards and honors, including the BMI Icon Award, a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, and two Emmy Awards for children's programming. He was inducted into the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2006. Buffett is survived by his wife Margie Washichek and four children.
