Terry Melcher, the iconic record producer, songwriter, and singer, has died on November 19, 2004, at the age of 62. Born Terry Melcher, the son of actors Doris Day and Marty Melcher, he is well-known for his impressive career in music. He is credited with producing some of the most pivotal albums of the 20th century including The Mamas and the Papas’ self-titled album in 1966, and The Beach Boys’ Pet Sounds in 1966. Also an accomplished songwriter, he wrote songs for The Byrds, Paul Revere and the Raiders, and Wayne Newton. As a singer he had hit songs with The Rip Chords, including "Hey Little Cobra" and "She Thinks I Still Care". Melcher was also an avid environmentalist and animal rights activist throughout his life, and was working toward establishing an orphanage in India at the time of his death. Melcher's death marks the end of an era and his influence, especially in the music industry, will remain. He is survived by his wife Terese Danenberg and his step-son, Peru. He will be remembered and missed.
