Lal Bahadur Shastri, a notable freedom fighter and former Prime Minister of India, passed away on 11 January 1966 in Tashkent, Uzbekistan at the age of 61. He was born in Mughalsarai, Uttar Pradesh on 2 October 1904. His education included a Bachelor of Arts from Kashi Vidyapeeth and a degree in Law from Allahabad University. He started his career by teaching in the Varanasi District School. His biggest contributions to India include his role in the non-violent movement spearheaded by Mahatma Gandhi during the struggle for Indian independence. He joined the Indian National Congress in 1926, and his political career took off soon after. He was appointed the Minister of Police and Transport in Uttar Pradesh in 1951. After which, he was concurrently given responsibilities of the ministerial posts of home affairs, transport and railways in Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru's cabinet. He was unanimously elected Prime Minister of India following the death of Nehru in 1964. He was best known for his successful handling of the 1965 India-Pakistan War, known as the Second Kashmir War. Shastri's legacy includes his famous slogan "Jai Jawan Jai Kisan" (Hail the Soldier, Hail the Farmer), his dedication to India's progress, and his devotion to democracy and peaceful national growth. He was honored posthumously with the Bharat Ratna, India's highest civilian honor, in 1966.
