It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Jawaharlal Nehru on May 27, 1964. At 74 years old, he was an accomplished figure in India's independence movement and the country's first Prime Minister. Jawaharlal Nehru was born in Allahabad in 1889. He was educated at Trinity College in Cambridge and at the Inner Temple in London. Returning to India, he quickly became an advocate for independence from the British Empire and a leader of the Indian National Congress. Despite periods of imprisonment, Nehru was elected as the first Prime Minister of India in 1947 when the country achieved independence. After India, he held office for 17 years and ran the country's government with a Democratically-elected Constituent Assembly. Under his leadership, India worked to expand its economy and strengthen its political and social systems. He is credited with strengthening Indian diplomacy on the international stage. Jawaharlal Nehru was highly respected in India and around the world. He will be greatly missed.
