John Wetton, legendary singer-songwriter and bassist, passed away on January 31, 2017, at the age of 67. He is widely renowned for his iconic work with the progressive rock band Asia, which spanned over thirty years. Wetton grew up in Derbyshire, England, and developed an affinity for music from a young age. After learning to play guitar and accordion, he began his professional music career at age sixteen. Wetton became a member of the highly-acclaimed British rock band King Crimson in 1972. Throughout the seventies, he worked with artists such as Roxy Music and Uriah Heep, as well as creating a solo career. In 1981, Wetton co-founded Asia with Steve Howe and Carl Palmer, among others. The band had instant success with their eponymous debut album, which reached number one on the Billboard charts. Wetton achieved acclaim for his vocal style, which was versatile and expansive. He went on to record many other solo and collaborative albums, and continued to tour until 2016. He was also an active member of BBC Radio 2’s music selection committee. John Wetton was an influential and distinctive musician, garnering much admiration from his peers and fans worldwide. His legacy will continue to live on, and his music will endure.
