John Entwistle, legendary bassist for the iconic rock band The Who, died on June 27, 2002 at the age of 57. Growing up in London, Entwistle began playing bass as a teen in school jazz bands and choirs. In 1964, he formed the iconic British rock group The Who and gained worldwide fame as a member of the "rock opera" group. Entwistle was known for his technique and stage presence. His aggressive and imaginative bass solos made him one of the most influential bassists in rock. He was regarded as a virtuoso and often performed with his vintage Gibson Thunderbird bass. He released several solo albums and collaborated with numerous musician from various genres. In his later years, he performed with Ringo Starr's All Starr Band and found success with a number of musical "solo" projects, including some with The John Entwistle Band and The Who. Entwistle's death at the age of 57 shocked the music community and he is remembered as one of the most influential bassists of all time.
