Hugh Keays-Byrne passed away on December 2, 2020, at the age of 73. Born and raised in Srinagar, Kashmir in 1947 to an English father, and Indian Kashmiri mother, Hugh had an extensive and successful career in film and television. He held dual citizenship in Australia and England due to his family's nomadic lifestyle. Starting his acting career in 1971, with the London production of Jesus Christ Superstar, Hugh went on to appear in many acclaimed films, including his most famous roles as Toecutter in 1979's Mad Max, and Immortan Joe in 2015's Mad Max: Fury Road. Those roles earned him international recognition. He followed those up with roles in multiple television series in the UK, Australia, and America. In addition to his acting career, Hugh had a passion for travel and wrote two books based on his adventures. Hugh was known for having a great sense of humour and would sometimes surprise his fans by vocalizing impressions of owls and other animals. His hobbies included photography and surfing, and he was said to be the life of any party. Hugh is survived by his wife, Christine, and two children. He will be remembered for his larger-than-life performances, and endearing and generous personality.
