Elia Kazan, iconic theater and film director, passed away on September 28, 2003 in his home in New York City. He was 94. Kazan was born Elia Kazanjoglous in Istanbul in 1909. He immigrated to the United States with his family in 1913 and went on to become standard-bearer of the Actors Studio. As a theater director, he shaped American theater and directed such classics as A Streetcar Named Desire and Death of a Salesman. He directed many films including On the Waterfront and East of Eden, both of which won Academy Awards. He was also the recipient of multiple lifetime achievement awards. He is survived by his three children, four grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren. His many fans also remember him fondly.
