Diahann Carroll, an award-winning singer, dancer, and actress, died on October 4th, 2019, at the age of 84. Carroll’s career spanned over six decades. She rose to fame as the first Black woman to lead an American television series, when she starred in the sitcom "Julia" in 1968. Her film debut in the 1959 production of “Porgy and Bess” earned her a Golden Globe Award and an additional nomination for an Academy Award. She left an impressive film and television body of work, including four NAACP Image Awards for her drama series “Dynasty”, as well as roles in films like “Claudine” and the TV movie, “Lady Day at Emerson’s Bar & Grill.” Carroll was also a Tony Award-winning Broadway legend, appearing in musicals such as “No Strings”, for which she won the Tony for Best Leading Actress in 1962. Off stage, she inspired generations of female entertainers of all colors. She is survived by her daughter, Suzanne Kay, her grandsons August and Sydney, and her sister, Faith Finklea.
