Carol Channing (1921-2019), best known for her award-winning performances in Broadway musicals such as Hello, Dolly!, died today at the age of 97. Channing had an illustrious career, starting in 1945, when she made her biggest splash in the Broadway revue Lend an Ear. She received a Tony Award nomination for her work in the show and would continue to perform in numerous Broadway shows throughout her career. In 1964, Channing was cast in the lead role of Dolly Levi in the Broadway musical Hello, Dolly!, a role which she had originated in San Francisco the year prior. She won both Tony and Drama Desk Awards for her performance, establishing herself as one of Broadway's greatest talents. Channing's success extended beyond the stage. She was featured in television and radio programs, most famously on The Ed Sullivan Show, and appeared in several movies. Later in her career, she published her memoirs, co-authored several books, and made appearances in stage productions around the country. Channing was an inspiration on and off the stage. She was a passionate supporter of equal rights, especially for women, and a tireless fundraiser for numerous charities. Channing will be remembered for her unparalleled talent and her lasting contributions to theater.
