Balasubrahmanyam (1946-2020), the legendary Indian film playback singer, actor, composer, lyricist, voice actor, and record producer, passed away in Chennai, India, on September 25, 2020, at the age of 74. Balasubrahmanyam, or SPB to his countless fans around the world, had been a prolific entertainer in the Indian film and music industry, with over 40,000 songs and more than 10,000 albums to his credit. A six-time National Film Award winner, he had also been honored with seven Filmfare Awards. He had a career spanning more than five decades, and his repertoire of work in the Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, Hindi and Malayalam languages earned him the title of "Gana Gandharva". He provided the playback singing for more than 10,000 movies in 16 Indian languages and was one of the most-heard voices in India. Born on June 4, 1946, in Nellore, Andhra Pradesh, India, SPB began his film career as a child artist in 1960. He made his debut as a playback singer two years later, with his soulful rendition of the song "Raaave Naa Cheliyaa" in the Telugu film Sri Sri Sri Maryada Ramanna. Over the years, he worked alongside veteran composers such as Ilaiyaraaja, M.S. Viswanathan, A.R. Rahman, and Hamsalekha, singing some of Indian cinema's most memorable songs. SPB had also acted in some films over the years, both in lead roles and in supporting roles. He had also won numerous honors for his contribution to Indian culture, including the prestigious Padma Shri Award in 2001. Balasubrahmanyam is survived by his wife, two sons, and legions of fans that will fondly remember him as one of the most influential voices of our time.
