We mourn the passing of Mary Pickford, an icon in entertainment and one of the most recognizable figures of early Hollywood. Mary passed away on May 29th, 1979 at the age of 86. Born Gladys Louise Smith in Toronto, Canada, Mary began her career in the entertainment business when she was just 6 years old. She went on to become one of the most famous actresses of the silent era, appearing in over 50 of these classic films. She was also among the 36 founders of the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences and the first woman to join the board, becoming an influential figure in the American film industry. In addition to her many accomplishments in the world of entertainment, Mary was also an advocate for artists' rights, creating the Motion Pictures' Patent Company in 1915, a production company providing work for actors and actresses. Mary will be remembered for her numerous contributions to the world of entertainment and her tireless work in bringing recognition and deserved respect to the profession of acting. She will be missed by many.
