Maria Altmann (1916-2011), a native of Vienna, Austria, died peacefully on February 7, 2011, at the age of 94. She was an Austrian-American Jewish refugee who became known for her success in reclaiming artwork stolen from her family by the Nazis during World War II. After escaping Nazi-occupation in Austria, Maria immigrated to the United States in 1940 and lived in Los Angeles, California. She was a devoted mother of five and loving wife of well-known pediatrician and philanthropist Fredrick Altmann. She was an active member of her community and supported a range of philanthropic causes throughout her life. Maria achieved notable success in her latter years, when she successfully reclaimed Klimt paintings, known as the ‘Lady in Gold’ and ‘The Lady in Gold Adele Bloch-Bauer’, which once belonged to her family and were stolen from them during the war. Following a lengthy and hard-fought legal battle with the Austrian government, she was able to reclaim the paintings in 2006 and gifted them to a museum in Vienna. Maria was a spirited individual who took pride in her achievements and will be remembered for them.
