Manuel Noriega, former military leader of Panama, passed away on May 29, 2017 at the age of 83. Noriega came to power in 1983, serving as the de facto leader of the nation. His rule was marked by oppressive tactics, leading to a US-led military invasion in 1989. He was captured and spent his last years in prison, most recently in Panama, following his extradition from the United States in 2011. Noriega held the rank of General in the Panamanian Defense Forces (PDF), and also served as a Chief of State after the U.S. invasion. He is survived by his wife and several children. Throughout his life, Noriega was involved in numerous legal controversies, leading to charges of human rights abuses and drug trafficking. He served time in multiple countries for corruption, money laundering and other offenses. Despite his legacy, Manuel Noriega will forever be remembered as a leader of Panama.
