Muthuvel Karunanidhi, the five-time Tamil Nadu Chief Minister, passed away on August 7th, 2018, at the age of 94. An accomplished scriptwriter with the pen name of “Kali N. Rathinam”, he was also a celebrated politician, orator and mass leader. Muthuvel’s political career transcended multiple positions, including being the President of the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam party, which he bunkered in 1969. He also served as the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu five times as a member of the DMK and was a Member of the Legislative Assembly for 13 terms. He held the portfolios of Public Works, Home, Finance, Prohibition & Excise during the five terms as Chief Minister. Karunanidhi was a masterful statesman, having provided influential leadership for key issues, such as the civil rights movement, inter-state relations, religious co-existence, state autonomy and the implementation of affirmative action. He was a leading statesman throughout his terms and gained a formidable reputation, having literatuarlly shaped the poltical discourse of Tamil Nadu. A prolific writer, he was highly regarded throughout the Tamil literary circuit, having authored many notable works such as Sanga Thamizh, Thirukkural Urai, Poompuhar, Romapuri Pandian and Kuraloviam. Muthuvel Karunanidhi was a multifaceted and highly influential leader who made significant contributions to the Indian political sphere as an orator, statesman and writer. He was highly revered in Tamil Nadu and throughout the country, and his legacy will continue to be honored. He is survived by his sons Tuesday and M.K. Stalin, and his daughter Selvi.
