Today marks the passing of K. Kamarajar, noted Indian statesman and leader, who died on October 2, 1975, at the age of 72. Kamarajar was a major figure in the Indian independence movement and served several terms as Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu. Kamarajar was born on July 15, 1903 in Virudhunagar, which was known then as Sattur. He was the second of nine children and worked in his father’s tailoring shop as a child. He briefly attended Madurai’s American College and was active in the local youth wing of the Indian National Congress party. Kamarajar went on to become an exceptionally well-known political and social figure, renowned for his commitment to social causes and his push for Indian political autonomy. He was known for his moral character, and as a leader of the Indian independence movement, helped to build a new nation for future generations. His strength and dedication to his people will be long remembered and respected. He is survived by his wife Lakshmi, and daughters Vijaya Lakshmi and Sharmila. He will be deeply missed for his wise leadership and tireless dedication to helping his people.
