Lucian Freud, world-renowned British portrait painter, passed away on July 20th, 2011 at the age of 88. Lucian, the grandson of Sigmund Freud, was born in Berlin in 1922 and emigrated to London in 1933. In the 1940s Freud began experimenting with a painting technique utilizing, thickly layered strokes of mostly unmixed colors. His unique portraiture paintings, often showing unflinching observations of the people in them, had a profoundly influential effect on post-war figurative art. Freud’s prolific career spanned six decades, during which time he produced many iconic works including “Benefits Supervisor Sleeping” (1995). His works were exhibited extensively in notable exhibitions including a major retrospective at Tate Britain in 2002, a retrospective at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York in the same year among other notable shows. In his lifetime, Freud received numerous awards including the Order of Merit from Queen Elizabeth II (1993) and the Companion of Honour (2008). He was also named one of the 20th century’s most influential artists by London’s National Portrait Gallery in 2007. He is survived by six children: Annie, Lawrence, Bella, Esther, Frank, and Professor Stephen Freund, and by three generations of grandchildren.
