Kwame Nkrumah, famous Ghanaian statesman, academic, and political leader, has died at the age of 62. Nkrumah was born in Nkroful, Gold Coast (now Ghana) on 1909-09-21 and soon after proving himself an exemplary student, he moved to the United States for higher education. He returned to his home country in 1947 and was a major force in the fight for independence from the British rule. Following Ghana’s independence in 1957, Nkrumah was chosen as the first president of the new nation, and led the nation’s transition to a republic 10 years later. Nkrumah is credited for bringing reforms in the areas of health, education, establishment of industrial centers, transportation, and foreign relations. He was also a leader of the Pan African Movement, elevating the voices of African leaders to improve the social, political, and economic conditions of the people in Africa. He was instrumental in the formation of the Organization of African Unity and made Ghana a leader in many regional and international developments. Nkrumah passed away on July 24, 1972. He will be remembered for decades to come as a visionary leader who championed the cause of his people and his nation. His lasting legacy will be his commitment to progress and inclusivity.
