We are deeply saddened to report the death of Jani Lane, the former lead singer of the glam metal band Warrant, on August 11, 2011. He was 47. Lane was widely known for his songwriting on songs such as “Heaven” and the Number 13 charting single “Cherry Pie”, a track that defined Warrant’s sound, and that has become a staple of 80s rock music. He was born John Kennedy Oswald on February 1, 1964 in Akron, Ohio, and changed his name when he began performing in the early 1980s. Although Lane had issues with drinking and drugs throughout his career, his legacy in music remains solid; in 2004, his work with Warrant earned them a Vocal Group of the Year Award at the Metal Edge Magazine Readers' Choice Awards. In 2010, he was a contestant on VH1′s Celebrity Fit Club: Boot Camp; over the course of the show he lost 54 pounds and reached his goal weight. He is survived by three daughters, Taylar, Brittany, and Madison, his ex-wife, his parents, and his four siblings. Lane will be remembered for his musical contributions and struggles with addiction, and for his resilient spirit.
