On July 2, 1997, James Maitland Stewart, an American actor, peacefully passed away at the age of 89. James Stewart was born on May 20, 1908 in Indiana, Pennsylvania. Throughout his weeks in Hollywood, Stewart became known for his quiet yet strong characters in “Mr. Smith Goes to Washington” (1939), “It’s a Wonderful Life” (1946), and the “Winchester ‘73" (1950). Over his five-decade-long acting career, Stewart earned four Academy Award nominations, two of which he won for Best Actor in “The Philadelphia Story” (1940) and “Anatomy of a Murder” (1959). He also received numerous other honours such as the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the National Medal of Arts, and Kennedy Centre Honors. In addition, Stewart had a distinguished military career, where he joined the United States Army Air Corps in 1941 and completed 20 combat missions while winning several awards such as the Distinguished Flying Cross. James Stewart will be deeply missed by his family and friends. He will be remembered for his immense impact on the film industry as one of the greatest actors of all time.
