James Garner, American film and television actor, passed away on July 19, 2014, at the age of 86. He achieved recognition in his early career for roles as rebellious young men in films such as The Great Escape and The Americanization of Emily. He went on to play debonair, wisecracking leading men in films such as The Children’s Hour, Move Over, Darling, The Wheeler Dealers, and Grand Prix. Garner also enjoyed considerable success on television, as private investigator Jim Rockford in “The Rockford Files” and as a military troubleshooter in “Bret Maverick”. His other television credits include the long running shows “Maverick”, “Nichols”, “The Rockford Files” (which earned him Emmy Awards in 1977 and 1978), “Man Without a Gun”, and “The Loner”. He also appeared in several made-for-television movies. Garner was active in charitable work throughout his life. He was awarded the 1974 Juvenile Diabetes Award by the Los Angeles Foundation for Education and Research and the 1984 Cedars-Sinai Medical Center Award in 1984. He is survived by his widow Lois Clarke and their daughter Gigi, his daughter Kimberly from his first marriage, and a long legacy of film and television roles.
