James J. Braddock

American boxer (1905-1974).

James J. Braddock, 69, a former world heavyweight boxing champion, died on November 29, 1974 in North Bergen, New Jersey. Known as the "Cinderella Man" due to his journey from poverty to fame, Braddock was one of the biggest sports stars of the 1930s and 1940s. He was also one of the most beloved champions due to his humble character and rooting for the underdog. Born in New York City, Braddock showed great promise in boxing from an early age, and he rose quickly in the rankings by winning a series of bouts. In June 1935, he knocked out Max Baer to become the World Heavyweight Champion. He held the title until June 1937. Braddock had a successful career post-champion, and he was widely recognized for his humility and accomplishments. He was inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame in 2001. As well as his athletic achievements, Braddock had other accomplishments. He served honorably in the US Navy during World War II, and later founded a construction company and a charitable organization. He is survived by his wife Mae Fox Braddock, their three children and several grandchildren.
