Ja'Net DuBois, an iconic actress and singer from Philadelphia, died on February 17 2020 at the age of 87. She was best known for her Golden Globe-winning role as Willona Woods on the hit 1970s sitcom "Good Times" and later for her recurring role as grandaunt Helen on "The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air." In addition to her career in television, she wrote the theme song for the sitcom “The Jeffersons” and appeared in the films “I’m Gonna Git You Sucka” and “Main Street.” DuBois’ career also included several Broadway performances including in the original cast of “Bubbling Brown Sugar” and a production of “Raisin in the Sun.” She was inducted into the Black Filmmakers Hall of Fame in 1981 and received an Emmy nomination for Outstanding Individual Performance in a Variety or Music Program in 1975. DuBois was a passionate advocate for social justice and had a unique talent for bringing joy and happiness to those around her. She will be remembered for her incredible talent and inspiring legacy.
