Nina Simone, a legendary American singer and civil rights activist, passed away on April 21, 2008 at the age of 75. Born in Tryon, North Carolina she is remembered for her impermeable blend of gospel and classical music, blues, jazz and cabaret. She composed and performed over one hundred songs, developing a unique style that often expressed her commitment to civil rights. She was not afraid to tackle difficult topics such as her civil rights anthem “Mississippi Goddam” and the passionate protest “Four Women". Simone sang with a powerful and soulful voice that sounded both smoky and emotive. Her music touched listeners deeply and provided the soundtrack of change in the American civil rights movement. She blended musical styles, effortlessly weaving classical and church music, jazz, blues and everyday language in her lyrics. In her lifetime, Simone was awarded a Grammy Hall of Fame award in 2000 and an Honorary Doctorate of Arts from Oakland University in 1999. Her passion, bravery and talent inspired and moved generations. Her music will continue to move generations to come.
