Hubert Humphrey, a staple in American politics, passed away on January 13, 1978 at the age of 66. Throughout his career, Humphrey held a variety of political posts, most notably serving as 38th Vice President of the United States from 1965 to 1969. Humphrey was born in Wallace, South Dakota in 1911 and attended the University of Minnesota, graduating in 1939. After college he worked as a pharmacist and then served in the military in WW2. Humphrey made his way into politics when he was elected to the Minnesota Senate in 1945, eventually being elected to the US Senate in 1948, where he served until 1964. During this time he was integral in the establishment of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and was the Democratic Party nominee for President in 1968, ultimately losing to Richard Nixon. After finishing his term as Vice President, Humphrey returned to the Senate in 1971 until his death. Outside of the political sphere, Humphrey was an accomplished orator and author. He received numerous awards for his service to the United States, including the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1964. Humphrey will be remembered for his tireless service to the people of the United States, most notably his emphasis on civil rights and equality.
