It is with great sadness that we note the passing of Heavy D—rapper, actor, producer, and international icon—on November 8, 2011 at the young age of 44. Born Dwight Arrington Myers in Jamaica, Heavy D rose to fame in 1987 with the release of his debut album Living Large. His infectious fusion of hip-hop and contemporary R&B captivated dancers and topped charts worldwide. His chart-topping albums, including Big Tyme, Peaceful Journey, and Nuttin' But Love, made him the most successful solo artist on Uptown Records. Famed for his jovial personality and larger-than-life presence, Heavy D's creative energy found new outlets beyond records. He lent his acting chops to roles in television shows The Tracy Morgan Show and Zoe Ever After, and to films such as B.A.P.S. and Tower Heist. He embarked upon numerous successful collaborations, writing and producing for artists like Big Daddy Kane, Bell Biv DeVoe, Sean "Puffy" Combs, and Will Smith. Heavy D's outsize legacy only expands. His deft wordsmithing, endearing presence, and vibrant stage performance are beloved and will be remembered for years to come. He is survived by his son and daughter.
