Georges Bataille, praised philosopher, author and art critic, died peacefully on July 9th 1962 at the age of 64. His prolific works such as Fiction and Presence, Guilty, L'expérience intérieure, and Madame Edwarda showed his creative expression and his unique take on philosophy, religious studies and youths' experience of the world. Bataille was born to Joseph-Aristide Bataille and Antoinette-Aglaé Tournarde in Reims, France in 1898. Growing up, he studied at the Lycée Lakanal, and later went on to become a librarian before starting his professional career. Batailles writing enjoyed huge success and recognition during his lifetime, and in 1945 he was awarded the prestigious Grand Prize in Literature from the French Academy. The following year he was made editor-in-chief of Critique, effectively becoming one of the most prominent thinkers of his time. Even after his death, Bataille is remembered as a profound thinker and innovator in the worlds of philosophy, literature, and art criticism. He is survived by his wife, Denise Rollin, daughter, Laurence, and son, Pascal.
