George Lascelles, 7th Earl of Harewood, one of the most accomplished figures in British royal and aristocratic circles, passed away at the age of 88 on July 11th, 2011. Lord Harewood was the elder son of the 6th Earl and Princess Mary, the only daughter of King George V; he married Princess Mary, the granddaughter of Queen Mary, in 1946. Lord Harewood had a distinguished career in the British Army, serving as a major from 1940 to 1946. After the war, he was actively involved in royal and aristocratic circles, as well as the performing arts. He was president of the Royal Opera House, the Royal Philharmonic Society, and the English Chamber Orchestra. In addition, he had served as the Lord Chamberlin from 1952 to 1973, and was admitted to the Privy Council in 1953. George Lascelles’ accomplishments outside of the monarchy and aristocracy were also notable. He was the founder and life president of the Society of Recorder Players, author of the book “Great Choirs and Choruses”, and an honorary fellow of Leeds University. His passing is mourned by his children and grandchildren, his extended family, and all those who knew him and will remember him fondly.
