Former First Lady, Eleanor Roosevelt, died on November 7th 1962, at the age of 78. She had a long career in public service and numerous human rights advocacy positions. Born Anna Eleanor Roosevelt in 1884 in New York City, she was the niece of President Theodore Roosevelt and was part of the prominent Roosevelt family. She married Franklin D. Roosevelt in 1905 and was First Lady from 1933 to 1945, during her husband’s presidency. She was an active First Lady, famously supporting the New Deal and working to advance the rights of the underprivileged. Roosevelt was also a prolific author, with eleven books, journalists, and UN delegate. She was strongly involved in a number of causes, including human and civil rights. As chairperson for the UN commission writing the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, she revolutionized international relations. Per her wishes, “I want to be remembered as someone who cared, someone who used what influence she had for good.”, Eleanor Roosevelt will be remembered for her tireless work to fight for justice and equality.
