Diane Cilento, an Australian actress, director and writer, passed away on October 6th, 2011. She was 78 years old. Diane was born in Mooloolaba, Australia in 1933. She studied ballet from a young age, and went on to join the Royal Academy of Dance in London. Her professional acting career began when she was just 17, when she starred in Picnic at Hanging Rock. Diane appeared in many films, including Tom Jones, The Wicker Man and Doctor Zhivago. In her later career, Diane appeared in the Emmy Award-winning series The Adams Family as Morticia Adams' mother. In addition to her acting career Diane is known as an accomplished theatre director and author. She wrote two autobiographies, one play and two children's books. Always outspoken in her beliefs, Diane was an active supporter of the peace movement and Aboriginal land rights. Diane Cilento will be remembered for her unforgettable film and theatre performances, her philanthropic work, and her courage to always speak her mind.
