On May 29 2010, in Venice, California, legendary actor, filmmaker, and visual artist Dennis Hopper passed away peacefully at the age of 74. Dennis Hopper was born in Dodge City, Kansas in 1936, and began his career as an actor in the early 1950s with smaller roles in films such as Rebel Without a Cause and Giant. He was cast in two 1958 episodes of Gunsmoke, which led to several others roles throughout the 1960s, during which he developed a distinct presence onscreen, characterized by his intense, brooding characters. Hopper rose to prominence in the 1969 classic Easy Rider, which he starred in, cowrote, and co-directed. His creative work in this movie solidified his place in film history, and was lauded by critics and fans alike. In the years to follow, he starred in films such as Apocalypse Now, The American Friend, Blue Velvet, and Hoosiers. He earned several awards throughout his acting career, including an Emmy. In addition to his acting pursuits, Hopper was also an acclaimed and avid visual artist, known for painting, sculpting, and photography. He also made his mark in the television industry in the 1980s and 1990s with memorable roles in Miami Vice, 24, and Twin Peaks. Hopper is survived by his fourth wife, Victoria Duffy, and their daughter, Galen Gae. Hopper left behind a long legacy in entertainment, leaving a lasting impression in cinema, television, and the art world.
