Christy Brown, renowned Irish writer, died on September 7, 1981 at the age of 49. Though confined to a wheelchair due to severe cerebral palsy, Christy became a published author at age 21 when he wrote “My Left Foot,” a memoir documenting his struggles while growing up with a disability. The book was adapted to a major motion picture starring Daniel Day Lewis, which earned him international recognition. Brown’s career spanned more than 25 years, during which he wrote other autobiographical works such as “Down All the Days” and “Lonely Place.” Additionally, his short stories, poetry, and other written works were regularly featured in magazines and newspapers around the world. Throughout his life, Brown created many works of art using various mediums including paint, charcoal, and clay; in particular, his artworks depicting farm animals were held in high regard. His legacy is remembered by readers and moviegoers around the world, and its effect still reverberates to this day.
