Arnold Schoenberg, legendary Austrian-born composer, died on July 13, 1951, at the age of 76. Schoenberg was born in Vienna on September 13, 1874. He studied music from a young age and rose to prominence in the early 20th century as a leader in the Second Viennese School and founder of atonal and twelve-tone music. Schoenberg's influential works included A Survivor From Warsaw, Verklärte Nacht, and the Grundgestalt Principle, as well as several unique compositional approaches. This exploration of new techniques eventually led Schoenberg to be considered one of the most important figures in modern music. In 1933, Schoenberg moved to the United States, where he continued to compose and teach. By the time of his death, his works had been performed around the globe. Schoenberg is survived by his wife Gertrud and children Ronald, Ronald's wife, Renée, Cornelia, Nuria, and Lawrence. He will be remembered as a master of Twentieth-century music whose influence will continue to shape musical works for years to come.
