Anwar al-Awlaki, 40, formerly of Las Cruces, NM, died on September 30, 2011. Al-Awlaki was a US-born radical Islamic cleric and a senior leader of al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula. He was also active in recruiting and radicalizing individuals, through social media and other tactics, for Jihad and terrorist activities. Al-Awlaki was considered a high-value target by the US government, and was subsequently targeted and killed in a US-led airstrike in Yemen. He is survived by his family and friends.
