Afeni Shakur, one of the most influential and inspirational artists and activists of her generation, passed away on May 2nd, 2016 at the age of 69. A native of Lumberton, North Carolina, Afeni moved to New York at the age of 17, where she became an active leader in the Black Panther party. Afeni famously represented herself at her 1971 trial for conspiracy charges against the U.S. Government, leading to her acquittal. She became an integral part of the hip hop world after giving birth to rapper and actor Tupac Shakur in 1971, of whom she was the primary custodian for her son's entire life. While providing the necessary support for her son's music and acting career, Afeni became a prominent figure in the entertainment industry, eventually helping to co-found Amaru Films and Amaru Entertainment. She established her son's imprint, Shakur Estate, with the assistance of her business partner, Wendy Wong. All of her work was dedicated to honoring and celebrating her son's legacy. Afeni was well known for always finding ways to express herself, both artistically and politically. Her zest for life and ability to inspire others was boundless, and those that knew her were constantly touched in some way by her presence. Her light will continue to shine through the remarkable accomplishments and lasting reminders of her greatness. She leaves behind a large family, including her son, Tupac, who sadly passed away in 1996. Afeni will be remembered for her eternal and unwavering commitment to her community, her family, and her son.
