On March 24th, 1980, the world mourned the passing of Óscar Arnulfo Romero y Galdamez, the beloved Catholic Archbishop of San Salvador. A courageous and dedicated advocate for human rights, Archbishop Romero was born in rural El Salvador on August 15th, 1917. Having first entered the priesthood in 1942, he eventually climbed to the highest ranks of the Catholic Church. On February 22nd, 1977, he was proclaimed the Archbishop of San Salvador. Archbishop Romero dedicated his life to defending the rights of the poor, becoming one of the most outspoken critics of the military dictatorship prevailing in El Salvador at that time. He infused the Church with its traditional prophetic role, preaching about justice and calling for people to reject violence, ignorance and oppression. In addition, he ministered to and brought companionship to countless people who were suffering because of violence, poverty, and injustice. Archbishop Romero's inspiring message of hope still resonates today. He was tragically killed on March 24th, 1980, when an assassin shot him in the heart while he was leading Mass in the Hospital of Divine Providence, San Salvador. He was 62 years old. Archbishop Romero's tireless fight against poverty, oppression, and violence and his commitment to providing hope and solace to the Salvadoran people will never be forgotten.

I wanted a perfect ending. Now I’ve learned, the hard way, that some poems don’t rhyme, and some stories don’t have a clear beginning, middle, and end. Life is about not knowing, having to change, taking the moment and making the best of it, without knowing what’s going to happen next. Delicious ambiguity. Gilda Radner
