On Sunday, January 9, 2017, Zygmunt Bauman, one of the world's most influential sociologists, passed away in Leeds, England, at the age of 91. Born in Poland in 1925, Bauman made significant contributions to the scientific field, and his work played a huge role in the development of the study of sociology. He is best known for his groundbreaking theories on modernity, morality, and the Holocaust. Bauman was most recently an Emeritus Professor of Sociology at the University of Leeds, where he inspired generations of students and scholars before his retirement in 1990. Throughout his lifetime he received numerous awards and recognitions for his work, including the Amalfi European Prize for Sociology and Social Sciences in 2009, Honorary Doctor of Philosophy at Södertörn University in Stockholm in 2003 and European Academic Prize from the Memorial Foundation of Charles Ritz in Berlin in 1999. He wrote many books, including Modernity and the Holocaust (1989), Postmodern Ethics (1993), and Liquid Love (2003). His work has been translated into more than 30 languages. He is survived by his wife, professor Janina Bauman, and his daughter Elizabeth Bauman. His memory will live on through his research, writings, and students who continue to find inspiration in his work.
