Zohra Begum Mumtaz-ul-Zamani Sehgal passed away on 10th of July, 2014 in her home in India at the age of 102. Zohra was born on 28th of April, 1912, in Rampur present-day Uttar Pradesh, India. She studied at the Queen Mary's Higher Secondary School and went to pursue her higher studies at the Isabella Thoburn College, Lucknow. During her college years, she discovered her interest in art and theatre. She began her performing career as a dancer with Uday Shankar's legendary dance troupe, while attending Khairagarh University. Later, she trained in drama at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art in London. Zohra acted on stage, television and film. She was well known for her roles in many popular films and plays including 'Tumhaari Amrita', directed by Saeed Akhtar Mirza, 'Chalchitra', directed by Mrinal Sen and 'Khoosro Mehrwan', directed by Jamil Dehlavi. Zohra was known for her feisty spirit and comedic talent. She was the recipient of many awards including the Padma Shri – one of India's highest honors – an honorary OBE, a Sangeet Natak Akademi Award and a Padma Vibhushan. Full of life and spirit, Zohra will be fondly remembered and deeply missed by her friends, family and colleagues.
