Zhou Enlai, born on March 5, 1898 in Huai'an, China, died on January 8, 1976 in Beijing, at the age of 77. He was a great revolutionary, wise statesman, and beloved leader of the Chinese people. Zhou Enlai joined the fledgling Chinese Communist Party in 1921 and was a team leader of Communist guerrilla troops during the Chinese civil war. When the People's Republic of China was founded in 1949, Zhou was appointed Premier of the State Council, a post he held until his death. He was known for his achievements in unifying the nation and promoting the economic growth of the People's Republic of China, and was affectionately and reverently referred to by the people as "Premier Zhou". He also played a key role in establishing diplomatic ties with the Soviet Union and the United States. Zhou was a renowned strategist and diplomat, and his distinctive and successful initiatives in affairs such as the Korean War, the Sino-Indian War, and the Vietnam War left a lasting legacy on Chinese and international politics. Zhou Enlai will be deeply mourned and remembered by generations that followed.
