LAWRENCE “YOGI” BERRA, beloved baseball icon and American treasure, died on September 22nd, 2015 in Montclair, New Jersey, at the age of 90. A Hall of Famer, Berra is widely regarded as one of the greatest catchers in the history of baseball, a 15-time All-Star for the New York Yankees who won an impressive 10 World Series championships throughout his illustrious 18-year career as a player. Berra also enjoyed a successful post-playing career with stints as a manager for both the New York Yankees and New York Mets in addition to numerous appearances in film and television. Berra was born in St. Louis, Missouri in 1925 to Italian immigrant parents. After being signed by the Yankees, Berra made his debut in the majors in 1946 and went on the appear in 14 World Series over his 18-year career. Yogi Berra was widely revered for his off-the-field presence as much as he was for his exploits on the diamond. Nicknamed after Hindu religious figure for his calm nature and off-kilter sense of humor, Berra was a beloved figure whose unique personality and clever casting of the English language set him apart. With his death, baseball and the world have lost one its most beloved figures. Though he is gone, Yogi Berra’s legacy as one of the greatest all-time players will take a well-earned place in the history of the beloved game.
