Yash Chopra, renowned and celebrated Bollywood producer, director, and screenwriter, passed away on October 21, 2012 at the age of 80. Yash Rai Chopra was born in Lahore, British India on September 27, 1932. He is most famous for his romantic and musical films, thanks to a nearly 60 year career that began in 1959 as an assistant director. He was the owner of Yash Raj Films, one of the leading production companies in the Indian Subcontinent. He directed some of the most iconic Indian movies of all time including Ittefaq, Kabhie Kabhie, Dhool Ka Phool, and Deewar. He also directed the critically acclaimed romantic films in the 1980s like Lamhe, Chandni, and Darr. His later works included Veer-Zaara in 2004, Jab Tak Hai Jaan, and Dil To Pagal Hai. He worked as a producer, director, and screenwriter for many award-winning and hit movies. Yash Chopra was the recipient of several honours including the Padma Bhushan, India’s third highest civilian award, in 2001. He was also awarded the Dev Anand Film and Life Time Achievement Award, the Silver Lotus, and the FilmFare Lifetime Achievement Award for his contributions to Indian cinema. His works have served as an inspiration to generations of filmmakers. Yash Chopra will be remembered as a creative genius who revolutionized modern Bollywood cinema.
