Yahya Khan, the third President of Pakistan, died on August 10, 1980, in Rawalpindi, Pakistan. He was 63 years old. Khan was born in 1915 in Qadian, India, and was brought up and educated in Pakistan. He served as a Brigadier in the Pakistan Army, eventually making the rank of full General in 1965. Khan was appointed Chief Martial Law Administrator and Minister of Defense in 1969. He became President of Pakistan on December 20, 1971. He was known for his policy to resist foreign intervention and favor free market economy and industrial development of Pakistan. After a lengthy tenure, Khan resigned from the presidency on December 20, 1971. He was succeeded by Zulfikar Ali Bhutto, who declared Khan a persona non grata and stripped him of his military titles and government pensions. Khan is remembered as a prominent political figure in Pakistan's history, leaving behind many accomplishments.
