Willard Scott, 87, died on 2021-09-04 00:00:00 UTC. Mr. Scott was a much beloved broadcasting giant, making his mark as the longtime, iconic, NBC television personality in his decades-long career. He started his career as a reporter for a radio station in Washington, D.C., before becoming a weatherman, a role he held for more than 25 years on NBC's "Today" show. Mr. Scott’s genial demeanor and outrageous, bunbury personalities (as “Bubba the Bear,” for example) made him beloved among younger viewers. He was also well known for being the first to welcome new babies to the “Today” show family in his "Happy Birthday" segment. In addition to his work in broadcasting, he ran the Morton Downey Jr. Show on a national scale for a time, and promoted charity work with several organizations. Mr. Scott retired from “Today” in 1996. He is survived by his wife, his two daughters and two grandchildren. He will be remembered for his wit, warmth and genuinely welcoming presence that he was known for throughout his career.
