A beloved actor and comedian, Walter Matthau, passed away on July 1st, 2000 at the age of 79. He was born in New York City on October 1st, 1920, to parents Rose and Milton Matthow. He attended Seward Park High School and went on to graduate from City College of New York in 1943 with a degree in drama. He became a star of stage and screen through his performances in films such as The Fortune Cookie, The Odd Couple, The Sunshine Boys, and Grumpy Old Men. Even during the 1960s, he was known as a part of the original “Rat Pack,” alongside contemporaries such as Frank Sinatra and Dean Martin. His career spanned five decades, and he was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor twice, both in 1966 and 1974, and was awarded a Golden Globe for his performance in The Sunshine Boys in 1975. He also won a special Tony Award in 1978. He is survived by his daughter, Carol, from his marriage to actress Grace Gilroy, and his second wife, Carol Saroyan, whom he wed in 1959. He was also survived by his son, Charlie, who died in 2020. Walter Matthau will be remembered as an esteemed actor, comedian, and family man. He will be deeply missed.
