Dr. W. Edwards Deming, a pioneering statistician and management consultant who had a profound impact on the world of business, died on Wednesday, December 20, 1993 at the age of 93. He is best known for introducing his System of Profound Knowledge to the business world, which focused on quality rather than quantity and emphasized the importance of customer satisfaction. His emphasis on reducing process variation and continual education helped shape the modern business world. Dr. Deming was born in 1900 in Sioux City, Iowa. He received his undergraduate degree in chemical engineering from the University of Wyoming and then went on to receive his master's degree and PhD in mathematics from Yale University. During his career, he served as a consultant for a variety of organizations, including the Air Force, the space program, and the US Census Bureau. He received numerous awards for his contributions to statistics and for his impact in business, including the Madison Medal by Princeton University, the President's Certificate of Merit, and the National Medal of Technology. He was preceded in death by his wife, Lola Elizabeth Shupe Deming. He is survived by his son, Gary Deming.
